The cost of illegal immigration reaches out into every area of our lives, affecting us in many ways most are unaware of. In our country, year in and year out, our government allows 182,000 legal and illegal immigrants to enter our country--give or take a few hundred thousand. By the end of the year they will number over 2 million, and will be all almost all uneducated, unskilled, and unable to speak English. They will bring with them a host of diseases and health care needs.
Now, the question of the day, who pays? We do. It is estimated that each year we spend $346 billion in taxes, in some 15 agencies, to take care of these issues. It was reported in the year 2007, that the Department of Health and Human Services spent $672 billion. $672 billion! You see these immigrants are poorer, and they of course pay less taxes, and are more likely to receive public assistance.
Immigrants account for about 59% of the "uninsured" in our country today. That's correct, 59% of our uninsured. The Latino immigrants fail to get immunized, suffer a high rate of TB, and have a high rate of drug, tabacco and alcohol use. The escalating number of unwed mothers indicate the failure to use contriception. Immigrants, therefore, account for a disproportionate amount of the Medicaid spending in this country.
Of course, in addition to all of this cost, there is the "Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act". This Act requires hospitals to treat illegal immigrants seeking emergency care. Your tax dollars pay for over $160 million for illegal immigrants under this Act. Are you ready for this? The addictions of drugs and alcohol make up the fastest growing disabilities illegals are claiming in our ER hospitals. Here you go:
1983: 3,000 cases
2003: 325,000 cases
That's not all. The above Act also provides for an immediate cash payment transfer, if diagnosed with a "disability (drug or alcohol addiction)". Here you go:
1982: 127,900 illegals on SSI
2003: 2,000,000 illegals on SSI
Now, if you will combine the cost of 400,000 babies born each year to illegals, the cost reaches into the billions and billions of dollars. Again, this money is all received from "our" taxes. We are paying for all of this, not the illegals receiving it. And it doesn't end there, we also pay for K-12 education, and yes, we do pay for the free breakfasts and lunches for this country's new poor working class.
We have become the "land of free milk and honey" for the immigrants who now come to our country. I suggest that America cut off the "freebies", and then see how many are willing to come. I don't know about you, but I still believe we all are equal--in all aspects. If you and I are required to pay our taxes, have insurance and support our families, then it also should apply to all immigrants entering our country. Period. It is the land of opportunity, and it has never been meant to be the "land of a free ride".

Don: Excellent article, however there are several aspects that you didn't touch on:
1. The tax loss by counties, states & federal govts., when illegals (Middle Easterner's) come to the US, commit their crimes, use the money to form a corporation, open up their own business under another name and never pay taxes.
2. Many M/Easterner's are well educated, speak several languages, good at forgery, are pathalogical liars, and are criminals in addition to being illegal's.
3. They make a fortune from their crimes, but they never pay taxes on that profit. Why gamblers and prostitutes are required to file and pay taxes on their income, why not the illegals?
4. They come here an commit Bigamy, in marrying an American while still married to their wives/husbands back in the homeland, but the authorities here won't prosecute? Wonder why not when the evidence is laid in their laps (own admission in discovery).
5. The damage done to American families far exceeds the monetary damage done to hospital's, etc., they can and do destroy lives. They bring children in this world for their own selfish purposes (to keep them in the US).
Can you put a price tag on this damage? I can't.
6. Explain to me how an illegal can have a business that operates 7 days a week, yet he was ordered removed from the US 5-21-07. Explain to me how he can afford 3 high priced attorneys, 1 for INS, 1 for felony Bigamy, and 1 for civil matters, i.e., child support, but can't afford to pay child support?
7. Explain to me how an illegal can get anything he wants from the courts, depending on how much he pays his attorney?
8. Explain to me how our federal agents keep cutting their deals with illegals, letting them walk the streets, continuing with their criminal acts, and this doesn't cost our country?
9. Tell me why when an illegal is ordered removed (deported) from the U.S. they they're not taken to the border, or put on a plane at their own expense back to their homeland? Look what this is costing our country? It's out of sight and uncalled for.
10. Tell me why we don't bring our military home where they wanted and loved, and secure our own borders, protecting the American people, as they should be.
11. Tell me why we don't have our own people at every border crossing into the U.S.? Can you or our government put a price tag on what's it's costing our government by not doing this?
12. Tell me what it cost our Social Services nationwide for medical care, food, etc...not to mention what it cost each state for for employees to deal with the illegals, not to mention providing translators everywhere, including our courts?
13. Tell me why our government doesn't make speaking english the first requirement for applying for citizenship?
14. Tell me what it's costing our schools nationwide for teachers and equipment that we the tax payers have paid for to be benefited by our children and grandchildren, that's being wasted on children that can't/don't speak english....not to mention they can't read english, so our books and equipment are also wasted on them.
15. Tell me why our state of N.Carolina can ask for a birth certificate when a foreigner tries to get a driver's license, but schools can't ask for a birth certificate before allowing an illegal to attend our schools?
16. Tell me why our gov't has made a program available to law enforcement to run checks on illegals, and ICE doesn't pick them up, and our government doesn't pay to reimburse our localities for the expense of holding the illegals?
17. Tell me why our lawmakers feel illegal's are entitled to be treated fairly by our laws, but they're illegals? They have no rights, they don't belong here and should be removed.
18. Why is our government saying it will build a fence and haven't?
19. Why won't our government take the money they're getting ready to fork out to banks and Ins. Companies, for the fraudulent loans they invested in, and let them fold. Why can't our government check out the loans in the major banks and and see which ones were fraudulent, and made or forged by illegals, and prosecute the crimes involved. Then put the money and people loosing jobs to work securing our country, building the fences, and those qualified into checking out the fraudulent loans and providing our FBI with the evidence for prosecution.
